OpenAI pauses new Pro sign-ups as demand for Astra overwhelms its systems
๐ง Discovery
So many people want to use OpenAI's new super-brain that the company had to close the door to new paying customers for a while, until it builds more room.
๐ฐ Essential
OpenAI has temporarily cut off new sign-ups for its $200-a-month Pro plan, as demand for its Astra model, launched September 3, puts too much strain on its servers.
๐ฌ Expert
According to product lead Thibault Sottiaux, it is the Pro plan that strains infrastructure the most, unlike the API, Go and Plus subscriptions, which remain open. Astra, described by Greg Brockman as a step toward AGI, costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens via the API. No reopening date for Pro has been announced.
